Adelaide Cottage Windsor: Inside $1M Worth Prince William & Kate’s Royal Home

Adelaide Cottage

Adelaide Cottage Windsor is one of Britain’s most talked-about royal homes. Tucked inside Windsor Home Park, this four-bedroom Grade II* listed property was home to Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their three children from 2022 to late 2025. Small by royal standards, it became famous for its privacy, deep history, and quiet family warmth.

Built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV, the cottage carries nearly two centuries of royal heritage. When William and Kate moved in, they chose it for simplicity no live-in staff, no costly renovations, just a private family home near a great school. In November 2025, the family relocated to Forest Lodge. But Adelaide Cottage remains a fascinating piece of royal real estate history.

Adelaide Cottage Windsor Location

Adelaide Cottage sits inside the 655-acre Windsor Home Park, just east of Windsor Castle. The setting is completely private  surrounded by parkland, shielded from public view, and just a ten-minute walk from Windsor Castle. For William and Kate, it offered a level of quiet that central London simply could not match.

The area is close to Lambrook School in Berkshire, where George, Charlotte, and Louis studied. Kate’s parents live under an hour away in Bucklebury. Frogmore Cottage once home to Harry and Meghan sits minutes away on the same estate, making Windsor a true royal hub.

My Visit to Adelaide Cottage

My client dropped a photo of Adelaide Cottage into our shared mood board with a single word: “This.” I arranged the visit immediately. Walking the grounds together, the cottage’s charm was undeniable modest in scale yet deeply considered in every detail.

Soft materials, graceful proportions, and a warmth that no amount of square footage can manufacture. My client smiled the entire tour. Understated beauty like this is genuinely rare. It is exactly the design language Todd Lynch brings to every home at UrbanSFreaks.com.

The Exterior Architecture

Adelaide Cottage Exterior Architecture

Adelaide Cottage’s exterior is finished in white stucco render  clean and bright against the parkland greenery. The slate roof sweeps down in classic Gothic Picturesque style, with decorative bargeboards along the gable edges. Multiple tall, slender chimneys rise from the roofline, giving the cottage its distinctive silhouette exactly what you see in the image: white walls, a grey pitched roof, and iconic chimney stacks.

The windows are traditional multi-pane, set neatly into the white walls. Architect Jeffry Wyatville completed the build in 1831 in the cottage orné style charming rather than imposing. The exterior has remained largely unchanged since.

The entrance is understated and secure. A gatehouse controls access, and a meandering gravel driveway leads through mature trees to the front. The original 19th-century porch still stands along the front east-facing side  preserved for nearly 200 years. Manicured gardens frame the approach. No marble pillars, no showy gates. Just grass, trees, and white walls.

Entering the Home

Step inside and the home feels warm and liveable. Historical detail blends with real family comfort. Ceilings are high enough to feel airy, and natural light filters through multi-pane windows. It does not feel like a palace. It feels like a home.

Living Room

The living room features soft pastel tones, gilded furniture, and curated artwork. A Graeco-Egyptian marble fireplace anchors the room one of the cottage’s most historically significant features. Plush armchairs and antique wooden side tables fill the space. Delicate ceiling mouldings add elegance without stiffness. It is a room designed for real everyday family life.

Dining Area

The dining space is cosy and flows naturally from the living room. With no live-in staff, this was where the Wales family sat for everyday meals. It seats the family comfortably with room for guests. Natural light keeps it fresh and inviting.

Kitchen

Adelaide Cottage Kitchen

The kitchen is practical and full of charm. Exposed wooden beams add rustic warmth. Muted cabinetry and a farmhouse-style sink bring a countryside feel, while terracotta floor tiles add texture. A small wooden table creates space for informal breakfasts. This is where William and Kate cooked everyday meals for their three children.

Adelaide Cottage: How Many Bedrooms

Adelaide Cottage Bedroom

Adelaide Cottage has four bedrooms  perfectly sized for the Wales family of five. The master bedroom is the most remarkable room in the house. Its ceiling features gilded dolphins and rope decoration, repurposed from the former royal yacht HMY Royal George a direct link to Britain’s maritime royal history. The room also has a marble Graeco-Egyptian fireplace. The remaining three bedrooms are warm and comfortable, each overlooking Windsor Home Park.

Bathroom

Adelaide Cottage Bathroom

The bathrooms were updated during the 2015 renovation. Fittings are traditional classic tiles, period-appropriate fixtures, and clean finishes. The renovation preserved historical character while updating plumbing for modern family life.

Outdoor Living Spaces

The outdoor space is one of Adelaide Cottage’s greatest assets. Set inside Windsor Home Park’s 655 private acres, the family had an enormous natural garden at their doorstep. Kate, who has spoken often about outdoor play, could let George, Charlotte, and Louis roam freely  impossible in central London.

The cottage’s garden features manicured lawns and mature trees tended for nearly 200 years. A gravel drive and a red brick outbuilding complete the space. Privacy is total the property is not overlooked from any direction.

Adelaide Cottage vs Forest Lodge

In November 2025, the Wales family moved from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park  roughly four miles away. Adelaide Cottage offered four bedrooms and a compact, private environment. Forest Lodge offers eight bedrooms, six bathrooms, a tennis court, a ballroom, and a long gallery.

The two properties represent two distinct chapters. Adelaide Cottage was the modest stepping-stone. Forest Lodge is the intended forever home  a fresh start after the difficult years that included Kate’s cancer diagnosis in 2024 and remission confirmed in January 2025.

This kind of deliberate downsizing before upgrading mirrors how other public figures have approached their living situations much like how Vivek Ramaswamy House became a talking point when he opted for a understated family property despite his considerable public profile.

Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge

The move was confirmed in August 2025 and completed by November 2025. William and Kate funded it privately. A 150-acre security zone was established around Forest Lodge. Throughout their stay at Adelaide Cottage, the couple paid market rent a deliberate statement of financial independence. Forest Lodge, built in the 1770s, now serves as their primary family residence as of 2026.

How Much Is Adelaide Cottage Worth?

Adelaide Cottage is a Crown Estate property and not publicly bought or sold. Its exact valuation is not disclosed. Comparable Grade II* listed homes with royal connections in Windsor are estimated between £500,000 and well over £1 million.

William and Kate paid market rent privately throughout their stay, rather than drawing on the Sovereign Grant. This approach to private funding is something royal watchers often compare to high-profile figures across the Atlantic including how Donald Trump House portfolios blend personal wealth with properties that carry strong symbolic and cultural weight.

Final Thoughts

Adelaide Cottage Windsor is not the grandest royal home in Britain. But it feels the most human. For three years, it was where William and Kate lived a quiet life. They cooked meals, helped with homework, and faced personal moments together.

The house has old details. There are gilt dolphins, a marble fireplace, and a 200-year-old porch. It sits in peaceful parkland. It offers privacy and calm. It shows a simple, timeless charm many people love. Many clients at Urbansfreak.com ask for homes like this, private, historic, and warm.
