7 Ways to Make a Small Bathroom Feel Bigger Without Renovating

blogOctober 22, 2026October 22, 2026

A small bathroom can feel cramped, even when there’s technically enough room for everything you need. Between toiletries, towels and bulky fixtures, it’s easy for the space to feel cluttered.

Fortunately, you don’t need to knock down walls or spend thousands on renovations to make a difference. A few clever design choices can make your bathroom look brighter, more open and considerably more inviting.

Here are seven practical ways to create the illusion of extra space.

1. Keep Your Colour Palette Light and Consistent

Dark colours can make a small bathroom feel enclosed, particularly when natural light is limited.

Soft whites, warm beiges and pale greys help reflect light and create a more spacious appearance. Natural finishes, including Travertine Tiles, can also provide inspiration for a warm, neutral colour scheme that feels cohesive rather than clinical.

Try keeping your walls, towels and accessories within similar colour families. Fewer contrasting colours can make the room feel less visually busy.

2. Use Mirrors to Create More Depth

Mirrors are one of the simplest ways to make a small bathroom appear larger.

A generously sized mirror above the vanity reflects light and creates the impression that the room extends further than it actually does.

For maximum impact, choose a mirror that spans most of the vanity’s width. Frameless designs work particularly well because they don’t introduce additional visual clutter.

3. Replace Bulky Storage With Wall-Mounted Options

Floor-standing cabinets can make an already small bathroom feel overcrowded.

Instead, look for ways to use vertical space without blocking movement.

Consider:

  • Floating shelves above the toilet.
  • Slim wall-mounted cabinets.
  • Hooks behind the bathroom door.
  • Small organisers inside existing cupboards.

Keeping everyday essentials off the benchtop immediately makes the bathroom appear tidier and more spacious.

4. Choose a Clear Shower Curtain

A heavy, patterned shower curtain can visually divide a bathroom, making the floor area seem smaller.

Replacing it with a clear or lightly coloured curtain allows your eye to travel further across the room.

If privacy isn’t an issue, a transparent curtain is an inexpensive way to create a more open appearance without changing the shower itself.

5. Improve Your Bathroom Lighting

Poor lighting can make even a beautifully decorated bathroom feel gloomy.

Start by replacing dim bulbs with brighter, suitable bathroom-rated alternatives. Neutral or warm-white lighting can provide good visibility without making the space feel harsh.

If you have a window, avoid covering it with heavy blinds. Frosted window film can maintain privacy while allowing daylight through.

6. Keep Your Floor as Visible as Possible

The more flooring you can see, the larger a room often appears.

Remove unnecessary laundry baskets, freestanding organisers and decorative items that occupy valuable floor space.

Even switching from a bulky bathroom bin to a smaller alternative can make the room feel less crowded.

Choose one simple bathmat rather than several scattered rugs.

7. Reduce Visual Clutter Around the Vanity

A crowded vanity can make the entire bathroom feel disorganised.

Keep only the products you use daily within easy reach. Store everything else in drawers, cupboards or matching containers.

You don’t need perfectly coordinated accessories, but limiting the number of visible bottles and containers creates a noticeably cleaner appearance.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Making a small bathroom feel bigger is largely about controlling light, colour and clutter.

Start with the easiest improvements, such as clearing surfaces, updating your mirror or improving storage. You might be surprised how much more spacious your bathroom feels without undertaking a single renovation.
