A dining table that felt perfectly solid last winter suddenly has a thin gap running down the middle. A drawer that used to slide open with one finger now sticks halfway. Most people put this down to age catching up with the furniture, or to it being poorly made in the first place.
Usually it is neither. It is the air in the room. Wood reacts to the moisture and temperature around it every day of its life, and once you know what is going on, these problems stop being mysterious. Better still, most of them can be prevented without much effort at all.
Wood Never Really Stops Moving
Wood is hygroscopic. The word sounds technical but the idea behind it is simple. Wood pulls moisture out of the air when conditions are damp, then releases it back when conditions are dry. As it does this, it swells and shrinks very slightly.
This process never stops. A table built two hundred years ago is still doing it today. A large solid timber tabletop can move close to a centimetre across its width between seasons with nothing at all being wrong.
A finish on top slows the exchange considerably, but it works as a barrier rather than a seal. Moisture still passes through, just more slowly. That extra time matters far more than people realise, because it lets the timber adjust gradually instead of all at once.
Trouble only shows up when the change is fast or extreme. Slow movement is normal and harmless. Sudden movement is what cracks things.
What Happens When the Air Gets Too Dry
Dry air pulls moisture out of the timber and the wood shrinks in response. The signs are fairly easy to spot once you know them:
- Thin cracks running along the grain, most often on tabletops and chair legs
- Gaps opening up where two boards meet across a tabletop
- Joints loosening, so chairs and tables start to feel slightly wobbly
- Drawers that suddenly feel loose or rattly in their runners
- Veneer lifting at the edges as the timber underneath pulls away
This is most common in air conditioned rooms and anywhere near a heater. Wherever the air is actively being dried out, wooden furniture feels it before anyone in the room does.
What Happens When the Air Gets Too Damp
Damp air does the opposite. The timber takes on moisture, swells, and starts pushing against itself:
- Drawers and doors that stick or will not close properly
- Veneer bubbling or lifting away from the surface underneath
- Joints forced apart at the glue line, which weakens the whole piece
- A surface that feels slightly tacky rather than smooth
- In bad cases, mould appearing on the back of pieces pushed against cold walls
Along most of the Australian east coast this is a summer problem. Humid weeks followed by heavy air conditioning create exactly the sort of back and forth that furniture copes with worst.
The Numbers Worth Knowing
If you want a simple reference point, here is what different humidity levels do to solid timber:

| 35% to 55% | The safe range. Wood stays stable and movement stays invisible. |

Around 45% is the sweet spot for most solid timber, with room temperature sitting somewhere near 21 degrees.
That said, the exact number matters less than consistency. Furniture handles a steady 60% far better than it handles swinging between 35% and 65% every few days. Stability is the real goal, not chasing a perfect reading.
A basic hygrometer costs very little and removes the guesswork completely. Human skin is a poor judge of humidity, and by the time a room feels sticky or dry, the furniture has already been dealing with it for a while.
Where You Put Furniture Matters More Than People Think
Placement quietly causes more damage than almost anything else in a home:
- Air conditioning vents blow dry air straight onto nearby surfaces
- Heaters and fireplaces create hot dry pockets that dry timber unevenly
- Exterior walls swing further in temperature and moisture than interior ones
- Direct sunlight fades the finish and makes the wood underneath brittle over the years
- Heated floors dry the base of a piece while the top stays normal, which twists legs out of shape
Moving a table a metre away from a vent or a sunny window costs nothing and prevents a surprising amount of trouble.
The Finish Is the First Line of Defence
This is where regular maintenance connects to everything above. A sound finish is what slows the moisture exchange down. Once that finish is worn, thin or damaged, the timber sits far more exposed and reacts much faster to whatever the air happens to be doing.
So tabletop polishing does considerably more than make a surface look good. It rebuilds the protective layer that keeps moisture moving slowly rather than quickly. On a table in daily use, that layer wears down faster than most owners expect, especially around the edges and the spots where people sit.
A worn finish combined with unstable air is what turns ordinary seasonal movement into permanent cracks.
Simple Things That Keep Everything Stable
None of this has to be complicated. A few habits cover almost everything:
- Get a hygrometer and check the reading in the rooms holding your better furniture
- Run a humidifier through dry months and a dehumidifier through damp ones
- Keep pieces away from vents, heaters, sunny windows and exterior walls
- Use coasters and trivets, because heat and moisture marks happen fast and locally
- Do not sand a swollen drawer straight away. Give it a few weeks and it usually settles back on its own
- Keep the finish maintained instead of waiting for visible damage. Many table polishing specialists now work on site at your home, so nothing has to be moved or left somewhere for a week
Responsive, Not Fragile
Wooden furniture is not delicate. It is responsive. It reacts to the room around it, and it always has, from the day the timber was cut.
Once that clicks, the gaps, sticking drawers and hairline cracks stop looking like faults and start looking like signals. Keep the air reasonably steady, keep pieces away from vents and windows, and keep the finish in good condition. Do those three things and a solid timber table will comfortably outlast nearly everything else in the house.
